Overview and Focus of Volume 2¶
While Volume 1 focused on plenary foundations, AI geomechanics, cold/environmental frontiers, earthquake dynamics, deep excavations, and geosynthetics, Volume 2 advances applied geotechnical problem-solving across five vital infrastructure themes:
- Ground Improvement and Chemical Stabilisation: Innovative methods to counteract subgrade fluidization under cyclic heavy-haul rail traffic, geopolymer-stabilized soil columns, carbon nanotube additives for liquefaction suppression, biopolymer treatment (xanthan gum), and non-linear vertical drain preloading consolidation.
- Geotechnical Practice, Risk, and Site Characterisation: Modern site investigation techniques including time-lapse Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) for internal seepage tracking, multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW), Dilatometer Test (DMT) dissipation for overconsolidation ratio (\(OCR\)), Building Information Modelling (BIM) workflows, and critical forensic evaluation of Standard Penetration Test (SPT) practices.
- Rock Mechanics and Underground Tunnelling: Numerical 3D TBM tunneling simulation through stratified urban geology, advanced seismic look-ahead geophysical probing, geological carbon sequestration in saline aquifers, ground subsidence mitigation under static/seismic loading, and IoT-driven early warning networks for rockfall hazards.
- Slope Stability, Forensic Landslides, and Early Warning: Forensic model calibration of open-pit mine wall failures, rainfall-induced landslide thresholds using the TRIGRS and Soil-Water Index (SWI) frameworks, random finite element analysis (RFEM) incorporating spatial permeability heterogeneity, and helical soil nail reinforcement.
- Transportation Geotechnics: Dynamic train-track-subgrade interaction, waste conveyor-belt rubber grids for railway ballast cushioning, geocell-reinforced expansive subgrades in flexible pavements, lightweight EPS geofoam highway embankments on ultra-soft clay, and pavement structural responses to electric vehicle fleet axle loads.
