Geotechnical Instrumentation for Monitoring Field Performance¶
About this reference
This is an original, open technical reference on geotechnical instrumentation, written in plain engineering language and adapted from the subject scope and structure of John Dunnicliff's Geotechnical Instrumentation for Monitoring Field Performance — the definitive reference textbook used worldwide for planning monitoring programs — together with the complementary NCHRP Synthesis 89 of the same name. It is not a reproduction of the copyrighted text. It is provided for education and field use, and every project is unique: the guidance here is meant to build engineering judgment, not to set minimum standards. The full Dunnicliff text and NCHRP Synthesis 89 are indexed in the GTI Doctor AI assistant for deeper queries.
Geotechnical instrumentation is the discipline of measuring how soil, rock, foundations, and structures actually behave under real loads. It turns "we hope it's fine" into "we know it's fine" — or, more importantly, "we can see it moving." This reference walks through the full arc of a monitoring program: why instrument, how to plan it systematically, which instruments measure which parameters, how to install and maintain them reliably, and how to turn readings into decisions.
Scope of this reference¶
This book follows the organization of Dunnicliff's work, consolidated into the following chapters:
| # | Chapter | What it covers |

How to use this reference¶
- Start with Chapter 3. The systematic planning approach is the hub of the whole discipline.
- Use it with the rest of the knowledge base. The instrument chapters cross-reference the Tailings Dam Safety and Monitoring Dam Performance (MOP-135) books for domain-specific application.
- Ask the GTI Doctor. The AI assistant can answer instrument-specific questions from the full Dunnicliff and NCHRP corpus.
A note on terminology¶
"Monitoring" here means the measurement of geotechnical parameters to confirm that behavior matches expectation. An instrument includes the sensor, its installation, the readout or datalogger, and the people and procedures that turn a reading into a decision. All three are necessary — a good sensor badly installed and unread is worthless.
Judgment is the instrument. Instruments support, but never replace, the engineering judgment of a qualified geotechnical engineer.
